It’s the little things, like waking up to an amazing misty morning, that can and do make your day.

It’s morning, July 18, 2014, and it is grey, cool, overcast and simply perfect. The sun will break out of the clouds in a few hours and burn all that wonderful grey and moisture away. And although that is also good, I do like “June Gloom”, even if it’s in July, August, September…
Climate change–very real–has been somewhat kind to us in Santa Monica, CA. With oppressive heat waves in the rest of the country and overseas, floods, storms and weather gone crazy all around, we here on the West Coast are enjoying tempered weather with cool breezes, so far (Predictions warn of blistering heat coming later in summer and having had no rain in ages, California is in a state of emergency due to a persistent drought with water shortage being a critical reality and an ominous sign of things to come, everywhere).
These are times when rime or reason are absent in our economy, politics and lives. These are times of pain and distress for many Americans and many of our fellow humans across the globe. These are times when now more than ever, it’s the little things that can both make your day as well as make all the difference.
The old adage of “Don’t sweat the small stuff” does not really work well when you lost your job and have not been able to find another in a long time. It does not really work well when your house is in foreclosure or gone, taking with it your dreams and hopes as well as your aspirations for your kids future. And it definitely does not really work well it you let it take you down into a doom and gloom state of mind. Don’t let it!
Things do get better, eventually. Life ebbs and flows in cycles of ups and downs and the trick is to relish the ups and patiently ride the downs, all without loosing faith in your abilities, your hopes and your dreams.
This is where my July 18, 2014 beautiful, cool, grey, overcast morning comes in. It is the perfect companion for my oatmeal with raisins, cranberries, bananas, blueberries, strawberries, almond milk and a little dark chocolate (recipe available upon request), washed down with a strong and flavorful triple non-fat latte. It filled me with optimism, energy, a feeling of invincibility and good things to come. You don’t need much to enjoy a perfect morning. And just look at the sunset this day ended with!
